The magpie is an iconic Australian bird.  In its breeding season it is extremely protective of its young and will swoop on anyone who comes close to the nest.  Aussie bike riders can be seen with comical cable ties protruding from their bike helmets to deter the magpies from swooping on their heads.  This painting is a satirical twist to this.  The magpie is protecting himself from humans.
